How much do you really know about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)?

1. In the United States alone, 1 in 4 sexually active teenagers has a sexually transmitted disease (STD) - also known as sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
2. Approximately 19 million people in the U.S. get STDs every year. About half of these cases are among young people, ages 15 - 24.
3. Most STDs have NO symptoms.
4. Females are affected by STDs more than males.
5. STDs affect young people (mid-20's and younger) the MOST, out of any other age group.
6. Some STDs are curable - these are known as bacterial infections. Some STDs are incurable (i.e. not curable) - these are known as viral infections.
7. Even if an STD is curable, it can still do damage to the body.
8. Other common STDs are trichomoniasis, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, hepititis, and HIV/AIDS.
