Adoption is a wonderful alternative choice. Today's adoption laws are not the same as years ago. Adoption today is making a life plan for your baby. Some Mothers and Fathers say, "I could never 'give away' my baby." You may feel that way because you don't yet have all the information you need about adoption. With reliable information and compassionate guidance, you can make a "life plan" for your baby. Some of your adoption choices are:
Open Adoption You meet with adoptive families before deciding. Everyone involved communicates directly without a third party. The birth and adoptive families disclose identifying information such as names and addresses. You may visit the home and join the family during special occasions. You and the adoptive family can contact each other by telephone. As the child grows, you can have face-to-face visits with the child.
Semi-Open Adoption You choose a family from information provided by the agency. The parents and adoptive family communicate and correspond through a third party or agency. Families only know each other by their first names. The adoptive parents may meet the birth parents before the birth and may attend the birth. Meetings after the adoption are arranged and supervised by the mediator. The adoptive parents may share pictures or letters with you.
Confidential Adoption You would request that the adoption agency choose your child's adoptive family. Neither you nor the adoptive parents disclose identifying information, such as names and addresses. After the child is placed, adoptive parents receive information about the birth family's medical history. The law limits an adopted child's access to finding a birth parent.
